THE BAND TALK GENRE-BLURRING INFLUENCES, THEIR DEBUT EP AND OPENING TOCSTOCK: THE REVENGE
In this special episode of the Ragamuffin Music Podcast, James catches up with In Absentia ahead of the band’s appearance at TOCstock: The Revenge on Friday 9 October.
The band explain how, after flirting with various labels to describe their sound, they eventually gave up trying to squeeze themselves into a particular box. Their tongue-in-cheek solution? Whatever-core: a musical melting pot drawing on everything from Loathe, Slipknot and shoegaze to hardcore, melodic deathcore, pop-punk and beyond.
The conversation also turns to debut EP Side Effects of Self-Reflection. Rightly proud of their songwriting and the way tracks such as 'Malice' and 'Hollow' translate live, they’re refreshingly candid about how much their production skills have developed since the record was released.
There’s plenty of love for the grassroots scene too, as they discuss the resurgence of heavy music around Birmingham, the wealth of emerging talent across the UK, and why the metal community feels less like a competition and more like bands, promoters and audiences building each other up.
And what should the Banbury crowd expect when In Absentia open TOCstock?
Find out now.
